How to Conduct a Polk County Case Records Search

The Iowa Judicial Branch provides an electronic online case management system for searching court records and case information. It provides public access to court records from every jurisdiction, including Polk County. Members of the public can perform searches using either a name search, a case ID search, or a citation number search.

The Name search option allows users to make general queries using one or two registrant name(s). In addition to providing a first, middle, and last name (if known), the inquirer must also indicate the position or role of the named subject (e.g., attorney, judge, applicant, guardian, trustee, etc). Next, searches must choose the case type (criminal, civil, small claims, juvenile, or traffic) and the scope of the search (restricted to Polk County or the rest of the state).

Case ID searches require that users provide a known case ID. The results can also be filtered to reveal results for a specific case type, such as civil appeal, administrative criminal, sexual abuse, or domestic abuse. Alternatively, users can conduct more direct searches using a known citation number.

For more specific searches, registrants have the option of a payment search. It allows users to request a search using a full or partial case ID, citation number, or name and then pay for confirmed results. Paid searches may sometimes take as long as 14 days, depending on when the records were added to the system.

In addition to these search options, the online search system provides an advanced case search option that offers more information on cases. Authorized users can search through the records by judgment/lien, case schedules, and case type. However, access to the advanced case search is only permitted for paid, registered users.
